Greece found itself in a familiar position today — pinned under German boot heels — but this time the venue was a soccer field and not a eurozone boardroom. Germany’s national soccer team beat the Greeks handily, 4-1, in their quarter-final match at the European Championships in Gdansk, Poland, with Chancellor Angela Merkel whooping it up in the crowd after each of countrymen’s goals.
Newspapers around the world had spent the past four days chewing up the delicious storyline. “Rejoice, dear Greeks,” wrote Germany’s unrepentant Bild newspaper, “your bankruptcy on Friday is on us!”
“Bring us Merkel,” read a headline in Greece’s Goal News, “You will never get Greece out of the euro.”
Players from both sides downplayed the political angle, with Greek striker Georgios Samaras, who scored his side’s only goal, calling the subplot “a bad thing.” He said his team was “going to play and enjoy it because we love it, nothing else.”

DONETSK, Ukraine - A double bill of German strength and Greek tragedy. Two for the price of one.
Soccer's gods clearly speak German. Because if they had a heart, Greece, not Germany, would have won the quarterfinal Friday at Euro 2012 - for sympathy reasons, alone.
The bottom has fallen out of the Greek economy. More than one in five Greeks are out of work. They are miserable and surviving on rescue loans from other European countries and the International Monetary Fund. So a short-lived jolt of joy could have done Greece some good.
Plus, the opponent, Germany, is the same country that has been pushing for Greece to get its finances in order and severely tighten its belt in return for bailouts. In short, this was a bit like the Greeks going toe-to-toe with their strict, no-nonsense bank manager.

US Reclaims Top Spot on Top500 Supercomputing List

US Reclaims Top Spot on Top500 Supercomputing List:
The U.S. once again has the most powerful supercomputer in the world, thanks to the U.S. Department of Energy's Sequoia, according to the latest edition of the Top500 supercomputer list, ending Asia's hold on the top spot. Sequoia's 1.57 million processor cores can perform 16.32 petaflops (quadrillion floating-point calculations per second).
The U.S. lost the supercomputer throne to the Chinese Tianhe-1A supercomputer in November 2010. That, in turn, was surpassed by the Japanese K Computer, which held on to the number one spot for two editions of the twice yearly list. The K Computer, able to perform 10.51 petaflops on its 705,024 Sparc64 processing cores, is now in second place, while Tianhe-1A has slipped to fifth place.
Sequoia is an IBM BlueGene/Q system powered by Power BQC 16-core processors running at 1.6GHz. It runs Linux. The DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration announced Sequoia's construction in February 2009. The computer is installed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and has been upgraded since it appeared at 17th place in last November's ranking.

But while we certainly see plenty of impetus on the personal transport front here at Gizmag, fresh concepts for the future of mass transport don't seem to enjoy the same level of exposure, despite the fact that many cities around the world are still saddled with public transport infrastructure that's been in place for over a century. There are some radical plans in the works, however, and the 21st Century will undoubtedly bring with it a raft of people moving projects that redefine our notion of public transport. So just what will be pulling into the station in 50 years time? Read on for our pick of the most tantalizing concepts out there...
